Okay, Gobby. I was a bit stuck for subjects for today's 365 photo, so I ended up taking this just outside Bewdley town centre. It's not a very interesting alleyway -- it's just a minor shortcut that I hardly ever bother using -- but it does have a fun name. Slightly disappointingly, the name "The Gob" doesn't seem to have any kind of historical or scandalous origin; "gob" simply used to mean an alleyway around here centuries ago. I assume there's some link with the still-used term "gob" for "mouth", but I don't actually know.

Yes, My Destiny, Answer by Sachimo

The story tells of a stubborn young master and his loyal servant. Because of their statuses, their love story is at the mercy of fate. Aoi is the heir to his family, but due to some discord between him and his stepmother, he is forced to leave the house. And there to support him is his childhood butler, Miyauchi. After living his days being doted on and served, Aoi finds his position reversed, where he has to work all day. And what has supported him throughout this lifestyle is his unrequited love of 5 years for Jirou, the heir to the Saionji family, a leading automobile maker.

My Rate: 8 (myanimelist.net/manga/102504/Kashikomarimashita_Destiny)

Even if the series started about the standard alpha/omega couple, Aoi and Jirou, the couple that stole the scene is that of Miyauchi and Kudou. The character of Miyauchi is the more complex, and the more interesting; I wouldn't have minded to see him regnonized as he deserved, but nontheless he has a very nice happy ending. There is indeed material for more stories, but the author apparently decided to stop with this happy ending, and in a way it's fitting. Very nice graphic, but if I have to find a defect, is that the panel were sort of very small, full of details and difficult to read. If you read it online you can enlarge the panels, but then you loose the whole effect of the page.

Beast's Storm by Morry Kuroi

In this world, there are humans without beast ears and humans with beast ears, called Bestia. Dr. Akira Miyaji specializes in treating Bestian patients and is a Bestia himself. Born to non-eared parents, he has been raised thinking he must suppress his instincts. So when he sees Sougo Kijima, a Bestia who lets his instincts run him wild, there's something that makes the doctor snarl. Sougo Kijima is one of the directors of the hospital where Dr. Miyaji works. And to make matters worse, Kijima has designated Dr. Miyaji specifically to be his practitioner! What is it about him that Miyaji reacts to so much?!

My Rate: 8 (mangaplanet.com/comic/615fa746b6393)

Beast's Storm is one of my favorite series if we are talking about omegaverse. Actually it's not really omegaverse, cause there is no difference between Alpha and Omega, but here all "beasts" (meaning human with cat genes) can give birth, despite the gender. The reason why I like it is cause it's really cute and all the babies make the series even cuter. I also liked that the relationship between Akira and Sougo starts pretty much in the first chapter and then develop from that (I don't like when they delay too much the starting of it). Even if there are no much turns in Akira and Sougo's relationship, the introduction of side stories, all of them interesting, is a way to maintain high the level of attention and interest of the readers.

Konya mo Nemurenai by Kotetsuko Yamamoto

College student Rikiya Higuchi knows he likes men, but he has never had a boyfriend. In a moment of courage, he signs up for a gay dating website, hoping to find a man willing to build a relationship together. Rikiya soon takes a liking to a pen pal—the first man to write to him—and agrees to meet up with him. But he is tricked and wakes up in front of a camera, about to have intercourse with his captor. Desperate to escape, Rikiya cries for help, and unexpectedly, a person materializes out of the walls!

By accident, Rikiya summoned Endo Guar Adroone—a high-class demon with a bad attitude—alongside his bird butler. As he removes Rikiya's retainers, Endo announces that Rikiya is his contractor and that he shall grant the unfortunate student anything his heart desires. Instead of asking Endo to manipulate someone into falling in love with him, Rikiya only wishes to be sent back home so that the demon and his assistant can return to their own world. However, Endo is escaping an arranged marriage—and Rikiya might have to deal with the arrogant demon for a little longer than expected.

My Rate: 8

Konya mo Nemurena, that you can translate in Another Sleepless Night, is one of most famous works by Kotetsuko Yamamoto. Truth be told, it's not really my cup of tea, and moreover I don't like much that the demon character has the features of a middle school boy. Yes, in reality he is hundred years old, but still, it's a little bit disconcerting to see him with that looks. It's also true that this is not really a sexy romance, so there are few kisses and even less sex scenes (just at the very end), so it really doesn't matter in the end. Anyway, the story is most fantasy, with little contemporary elements, therefore, as I said, not really my cup of tea.

The dangers of idealising Ukraine

Public

My country (the UK) is currently allied with Ukraine against Russia, and that is strongly supported here. I too think it's the right thing to do, given that the enemy is Vladimir Putin, a vicious and expansionist dictator who is a clear threat to peace in Europe much more widely than Ukraine -- and a man whose regime has directly attacked the UK physically (Salisbury) and online (plenty of times). Over the Atlantic, Donald Trump is making it increasingly clear that he likes Putin and by extension Russia, so we in Europe need to step up our game. It won't be easy, but I don't think we have any alternative.

But as I said in the subject line, we need to avoid that leading to us thinking that Ukraine or President Zelenskyy are perfect, because they're not. For example, last month Ukraine passed a law weakening the independence of the country's anti-corruption bodies. This was very unpopular and caused the largest street protests in Ukraine since Russia's invasion. A week later, the law was reversed -- but damage had already been done, and trust in the President has fallen. Zelenskyy said he'd changed course after the protests, and also because of reaction from elsewhere in Europe.

That last bit is significant. Ukraine wants to join the EU, and it hasn't done itself any favours with this. Ukraine has had serious problems with corruption since long before the current war, and that hasn't improved -- the Corruption Perceptions Index shows that it's seen as more corrupt than every single current EU member. Ukraine is nowhere near meeting the Copenhagen Criteria, especially on judicial independence, and its wartime restrictions on the expression of Russian culture are incompatible with EU ideals.¹ The idea that even if peace were secured now, Ukraine would be an EU member quickly, is wildly overoptimistic. It won't be.
¹ This one is complicated by the fact that a few existing member states, such as Latvia, have similar restrictions.

This does not mean that Ukraine should give up on becoming part of the EU. Bulgaria was once hugely corrupt, still has significant problems in that regard, yet is now an EU state. Perhaps a bigger stumbling block might be one that rarely makes the headlines: agriculture. An EU-member Ukraine would be expected to accede to the Common Agricultural Policy, yet as things stand it would risk severely unbalancing it. Unlike other EU countries, Ukraine has enormous agri-businesses cultivating hundreds of thousands of hectares, and some Ukrainian intensive farming practices don't meet EU environmental standards.

I won't go on as I am certainly not a specialist, but my basic point is this: everyone wants peace, or at least everyone worth considering wants peace. But even when peace is achieved, Ukraine does not magically become like any other European country. Not even when the wartime damage has been repaired. After reforms? Well, it's a European state and like most other European states, including the UK, there are some serious problems in its structures that can't simply be brushed aside because it's anti-Putin. (I'm aware that I have at least one Ukrainian reader here, so I hope I can accept corrections to my thoughts with grace and humility.)

Angel Buddy by MasterGin and Chungnyun

To others, Sooho might appear a little strange. But to Sooho, there's much more to "life" than the average person may ever know. And that's because Sooho sees spirits. At first he thought his "abilities" were limited to seeing the average ghost here and there, but one day he witnesses a real life angel floating in midair and staring at him. He then promptly breaks said angel's wing by accident. Sooho's had many a ghost follow him around in his short life, but he's never had to take care of an angel...nor a spirit quite so handsome as Taker.

My Rate: 8 (www.lezhinus.com/en/comic/angelbuddy)

I'm not really a big fan of contemporary fantasy romance (i.e. romance with fantasy elements in a contemporary setting) so I maybe will not give complete justice to Angel Buddy. The story is not bad, and the graphic is nice, but, all in all, it was a little boring, it didn't manage to catch me. There is a big bonus thought, it's a full happy ending, so that is could be a reason to give this a try.

VJ Day

Public

Tributes on Black Sabbath Bridge, Birmingham, 15th August 2025
196/365: Tributes to Ozzy Osbourne, Birmingham

I was in Birmingham today for boring reasons, but there was some interest to be had. It's VJ Day, and so there was a two-minute silence at midday. I observed it, but not many others did. To be honest, I'm not surprised: I have to say I think the sheer number of such silences is becoming excessive. We really can't mark all significant WW1/WW2 anniversaries this way, otherwise we'll be having them every day.¹ It feels a bit like the way people wear poppies now from about mid-October, which again I find excessive. Go back a few decades and they were often worn for only one day. I do go beyond that, but not the weeks and weeks that seem to be expected of people like newsreaders now.
¹ Plus, as my late grandpa (who was in the Royal Engineers and would have been posted to Burma had the war not ended) said, VJ Day is different from Remembrance Sunday. He felt it should be more of a celebration and less sombre.

There was nothing photogenic that I saw on that score, so my 365 photo for today is something completely different. This is Black Sabbath Bridge (yes, that's its official name) on Broad Street, across a canal just outside the city centre. Unsurprisingly it's become a centre for fans to leave tributes to Ozzy Osbourne, as you can see here. I had to wait a couple of minutes to get this photo because there were so many other people -- tourists from all over the world -- who wanted to get their pictures taken in front of it. The city museum had a temporary exhibition on Osbourne's solo career, too, although I didn't have the time (or, really, the inclination) to go and see that. I was in Broad Street anyway, so...

Hyperventilation by Bboung bbang kkyu

Myongi and Sunho haven't seen each other since they were 18 years old. Now 27, they run into one another at a high school reunion, and the romantic feelings they had for one another come rushing to the surface. But are they the same people now that they were back then?

My Rate: 8 (amzn.to/41EgNhB)

Hyperventilation is a short manhwa, but in only 6 episodes it packs material worthy for 10 times more. The story is simple, but somewhat idylliac: Myongi and Sunho were high school mates and they really didn't have much of relationship, but it's clear that they both had unrequited feelings for each others, only that it was too much of a big thing for 18 years olf. 10 years later, the things have changed, and they are ready to grasp their chance. It's really a one night span story, but as I said, it's enought to make you fall in love for these characters. Very nice graphic as well. Anite adaption is one of my favorite too.

Semantic Error by Angy and J. Soori

A BUG IN THE SYSTEM

Reason, routine, and rules. These are the tenets that computer science major Sangwoo Choo lives by, so when the rest of his teammates fail to contribute to their group’s presentation, he cuts their names from the project—including that of a complete no-show, whose plans to graduate and study abroad have gone down the drain as a result. Not that that’s any of Sangwoo’s business…until he realizes that Jaeyoung Jang, the talented design major he was hoping to hire for his video game, is: one, that very same classmate, and two, hell-bent on returning the favor and being the biggest thorn in his side! Will Sangwoo be able to debug this semantic error before it upends his entire life?

My Rate: 9 (amzn.to/45PAIwC)

While reading Semantic Error you cannot avoid to compare it with the drama, since, for once, the drama is quite respecting the storyline. One thing that was completely different are the features of Jaeyoung Jang, he actually looks like a western man in the manhwa, while instead it's a classical korean beauty in the drama. In a way, the drama is more realistic than the manhwa. Said that, the graphic of the manhwa is very good and the love story, although innocent, is very nice. I would say that, if you liked the drama, you will not be disappointed by the manhwa.

Intoxicated by Changpei Literature

Omega Shen Tingwei wakes up after a traffic accident and soon realizes something is very wrong. The people around him have no idea what an omega is, the local pharmacy doesn't carry his heat suppressants, and no one - including the doctor at the nearest hospital - seems to understand the reason he is feverish and giving off the scent of wine is that he's going into heat. Enter Lian Jue, a wealthy man with Emotional Deprivation Disorder who is struggling to balance running his company, appeasing his difficult family, and caring for his adopted son, Kangtong. When he encounters the heat-drunk Shen Tingwei staggering around the city and saves him from getting hit by yet another vehicle, the two men soon become entangled in each other's lives. Shen Tingwei is lost and helpless in a world not his own, and Lian Jue can't help but be drawn to the intoxicating stranger...

My Rate: 8

For being a Chinese manhua, Intoxicated is pretty sexy; of course the sex is not explicit, but at least it was not totally erased. Said that the story is a mix of comedy and emotional romance, meaning that the romance is not all easy and peachy, but at least it's always clear from the first episodes that these two are a couple and are trying to reach a level where their love can develop peacefully. Really nice graphic (Chinese are top on this) and the mix between chibi and ordinary characters are good and not disappointing. Sometime I found the introduction of Chibi like an intrusion, but not in this case.

St Chad's Gospels, Lichfield Cathedral, 14th August 2025
195/365: St Chad's Gospels, Lichfield Cathedral
Click for a larger, sharper image

I was in Lichfield today, ancient cathedral city and birthplace of Samuel Johnson. I had a couple of hours to myself, which was a nice treat, and I spent a good deal of that in the cathedral. They were showing the Wildlife Photographer of the Year winners, which as usual were superb -- though the low lighting in the cathedral wasn't ideal for this purpose. I'm also not that keen on the way Lichfield has (or at least had today) someone standing next to the way out asking if I wanted to donate. I'm used to Worcester Cathedral, which isn't as pushy and simply has various ways to donate (or buy stuff in the shop), while Gloucester Cathedral openly asks you for a specific amount on the way in. I must say that I prefer both of those approaches. I've never liked being asked for money on the way out of a place, whether it be a charity shop or a church. As it happened I'd called at a donation station earlier on anyway.

Anyway, that little moan apart, Lichfield Cathedral is a glorious building. It's huge inside and out -- you keep happening upon extra side chapels and staircases and the like. In the Lady Chapel they were exhibiting some of their greatest treasures, of which this may be the most remarkable: the surviving volume of St Chad's Gospels, written in the eighth century. (The second volume was probably lost when the cathedral was looted in 1646, during the Civil War.) This book, though in Latin, contains marginal annotations in Old Welsh -- some of the earliest in that language to survive. The similar pigment in the Lichfield Angel and analysis of the paper suggest that, although the book was with the Welsh monks of St Teilo in the ninth century, it was probably written in Lichfield itself, not in Wales.

It really is an extraordinary sight, even behind glass, and even to a non-religious person like me. I'll reassure you that (probably unlike most visitors!) I read every single word of Lichfield Cathedral's photography policy, and every word on the signs up in this room, and there was nothing stopping me taking this photo. I did not, of course, use flash -- so I think it's come out all right given that the dim lighting meant I had to use a 1/14s shutter speed!

His father is a singer and his mother an actress, while older brother Shogo is the lead singer for the popular band “CRUSHERZ.” Though his family is packed with famous celebrities, Izumi Sena is just your average guy. Currently a college student, he is a huge otaku with aspirations of becoming a manga creator. But one day he gets roped into participating in a TV commercial and meets popular young actor Ryoma Ichijo. Could this be the same boy he starred in a commercial with over ten years ago?!

My Rate: 9 (amzn.to/4lxm16a)

Love Stage!! is probably one of the most adapted manga out there: anime, drama, movie, basically every type of media. Indeed the manga is quite a classic yaoi story, with the seme and uke pair, and with a lot of comedic undertones making it more cute than sexy. I can for sure say that I like the graphic, even more since in the anime version I can see it in full color. And for once the two live action adaptations are not bad either. If I have to be true, my favorite couple is the side one, the brother and the manager, and I'm a little sad that, even if they have their own manga, it was not adapted.

I'm Yours, Blood and Soul by GyaGa

Fellatio in the bathroom and a wild night of sex after clubbing? What more could anyone ask for? Well, a meal for starters. For a vampire like Bokhee, that'd be blood from a living human. Too bad he hooked up with Mariam, an undead demon. So, what do you get when you combine unquenchable thirst and deviant appetites? A sexual fantasy of epic proportions from the creator of "The Baker on the First Floor."

My Rate: 8 (www.lezhinus.com/en/comic/blood_soul_en)

I'm Yours, Blood and Soul was an hit and miss with me; first of all the real graphic is way more raw than what appears in the covers, and the strange thing is that the author used just few colors, making it sort of flat. The story per se is not bad, a vampire who is binded to a demon, but it could have been a little more sexier, and instead, when there were intimate moments, it diverted to almost comic, for then switching to drama when the sex was done.

Random stuff that I've read/watched lately that I don't have to say much about, but still wanted to mention!

📚 Read a couple of BL manga; Boku no Mii-chan and Hugpai (⚠️ the Hugpai cover is suggestive, in case there might be smol bebe eyes in the room). Both have NSFW chapters, though Boku no Mii-chan is more serious and story focused while Hugpai is more comedic and pretty NSFW throughout. The couples were both cute! (Sidenote: Thanks to Hugpai for giving me the motivation to dust off and finish writing Malleable.)

📽️ I haven't seen a Jurassic Park movie since Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (which I can barely remember), so I wasn't sure what to expect for Jurassic World Rebirth. It was fine; straightforward plot, forgettable but likable characters, cool dinosaurs. I thought the (budding) friendship between Zora Bennett and Dr. Henry Loomis was nice. This was the first time I saw ScarJo starting to look older (the neck will always betray you). This isn't a dig; just something I noticed.

He awakens in the kingdom of Yooguk, where the people call him “emperor” and serve a god named Yellow Dragon. Dojin soon discovers that Yellow Dragon called him to Yooguk for a purpose: to share his “life force” and protect the kingdom. As Dojin slips deeper into Yellow Dragon’s cold embrace, how far will he go in order to get back home?

My Rate: 8 (www.lezhinus.com/en/comic/yellowdragon)

A manhwa from Brothers Without a Tomorrow is sort of an assurance of nice graphic and nice story, but the Tale of the Yellow Dragon has a bittersweet ending that I really didn't want. There were other ways to make the story consinstent; I'm not saying it's a bad ending, it's just thant it's a little sad, nothing tragic indeed, but I cannot avoid to simpatize with Dojin and his yearning for Yellow Dragon. Anyway, if you speak of fantasy, Tale of the Yellow Dragon is a good one, no too much dark, a little bit spicy, and for sure with very nice graphic.

Jackass! by Scarlet Beriko

Practical Keisuke’s incredibly handsome best friend Masayuki has always rubbed him just a little bit the wrong way. Maybe it’s because Masayuki is rich, carefree, and so stunningly handsome that he can, and does, have any girl he wants? But one day, when Keisuke accidentally wears his older sister’s panty hose to gym class, it’s suddenly his hot friend who’s doing the rubbing…on Keisuke’s panty hose-clad legs! Has he unwittingly unleashed a secret fetish that will change their relationship forever?

My Rate: 9 (amzn.to/3UwmSZI)

I really like the mangas of Scarlet Beriko, the graphic is top-notch and the story are original, sexy but not crass. In this case, it's about the fetish of Masayuki, who gets excite by the legs of Keisuke, but only if dressed in panty hose... I know the plot is somewhat stupid, but it's the way the author develops the story that is interesting. For example,
Masayuki is aware that his fetish can create issues to Keisuke, and he searches to distance himself, to not being a bother to the other boy. Moreover, Masayuki doesn't mix sex with his fetish, being excited by Keisuke's legs doesn't mean he forces Keisuke, it's actually the opposite, it's Keisuke that wants something more deep with Masayuki. So yes, a little bit of a stupid plot, but a very nice development.

Not quite as warm today, but it still felt hot in the sunshine. I was in Kidderminster for a small part of the day, and that's where I took this photograph. It shows part of the former Mill Street Hospital, built in 1870, which closed about 30 years ago when its operations moved to the more modern building that serves as Kidderminster Hospital today. What you see here is only about half the old hospital, as there's a second, similarly sized (but less striking) building out of shot to the left. This building has now been converted to residential use. It's in a reasonably good place for this, as the town centre and a fairly large Sainsbury's supermarket are only about ten minutes' walk down the hill (off to the right).

After moving in, Min-kyum heads out for a meal…then somehow wakes up at home with strange marks on his neck. He tries to shrug it off, but his deskmate at the new school looks suspiciously pale and familiar…

My Rate: 8 (www.lezhinus.com/en/comic/mypetbat)

I have to admit that vampire stories are an hit and miss with me, they need to be particularly original for me to like them. My Pet Bat is a mix of cute and drama, but it never edges on tragedy, so that it makes the perfect blend for me. The graphic is nice, even if at first I found disconcerting that sometime the panels were not in full color, but that was something you get used soon and then you can appreciate the story. I liked that the vampires in this story are not invincible human beings and actually they can be pretty fragile. I also liked they are not the usual solitary character who focused on their own partner like there is nothing else around. Here the vampire is a high school student, with all the insecurity of an ordinary teenager boy. Of course the best character is
Min-kyum and is heart, open and naive, despite all the trauma in his life. He is still able to accept love, even if he makes some mistakes while searching for it.

Royal Servant has a very nice graphic, and also the storyplot is quite original, but there is something that made me crazy while reading it: it seemed like sometime the author decided to skip scenes, and we were reading about something without having being "prepared" to it. Like when Lucaon decided have sexual intercourse with Kyon, what was pushing him? what was the reason why he picked Kyon and not some other of his servants? this was probably the most ecclatant of all the events, but it happened also for smaller events thoughtout the story. Moreover the bittersweet ending was also something that made me sad. So nice story, nice graphic, but I don't think I will read it again.

A few thoughts on AI. Mostly a memo to self...

Public

...for whenever I get the time to write in more detail. But I might as well put it here. "AI should go away" (narrator from the future: AI did not go away) is not only unrealistic, it's also simplistic. For a start, LLMs (eg ChatGPT) are a subset of AI, not the whole thing. For another thing, chatting to an AI bot does not have to be worthless, as long as you understand what you're doing and why. And for another, some of the arguments being deployed against it are wildly broad, eg "stop machines doing human jobs". Without qualification? The printing press in the 15th century put humans (calligraphers) out of a job, and I'm assuming most people don't really want to live in 1450.

There are good arguments for being cautious and even cynical about quite a lot of aspects of AI. There are very serious questions about its effect on society, the economy and even our emotional wellbeing. Say that and I'll agree as I'm of that opinion myself, and again I'll try to expand on this on here at some point. But if you want recruits for the army of "AI is all slop, full stop" then I'm afraid I'm not going to enlist.
